The W in Designer: Flyest Caps of the Week (X)

From extra to incognito, WNBA players are bringing the vibes with their caps.

As a heatwave strikes around the world, summer accessories like sunglasses and caps become more than just a style statement. Heat is an important theme for the game of basketball– when players are heating up on the court or heat, like when Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi are named as cover stars on the NBA 2K23 video game. Caps have always been essential for athletes, but the WNBA players use this accessory to turn up the heat of their outfits.

Players rocking caps, of any variety, is the focus of the tenth edition of “The W in Designer: Flyest Fits of the Week.” Several WNBA teams have been traveling to games this week, where caps can be worn to give off an incognito aura. But caps can also be used to draw more attention to something that’s on a player’s mind or add an extra element to an outfit. There are fitted caps, trucker caps, baseball caps, and other styles that reflect the different tastes or moods of the league’s players. It’s interesting to consider how a single accessory can reveal so much about a player’s vibe.

DiJonai Carrington

While some people might wear a cap to elevate a lazy outfit, DiJonai Carrington uses her cap to make her outfit look more extra. Rocking a Von Dutch Pink Crush Velvet Trucker and denim shorts, DiJonai channels Paris Hilton’s vibes in The Simple Life. The Connecticut Sun player loves incorporating pink colors into her style, but she always adds a tough twist. This week, she wears a pair of tight, pink thigh-high boots to bring an edgy element to her pre-game outfit. Carrington also adds to her chic color coordination with a Louis Vuitton purse in a new Pink Sunset colorway.

Tyasha Harris

Tyasha Harris has been infusing feel-good patterns and colors into her streetwear-inspired pre-game outfits. This week, she wears a Smiley Face Trucker Hat that matches the color of the drawstring on her oversized paisley printed shorts. Wearing a gray t-shirt with artwork from Pink Floyd’s The Division Bell album, the Dallas Wings player creates a cool contrast between the abstract faces and the Smiley face on her cap. For additional athlete swag, she also wears white crew socks with a pair of Men’s Gucci Off The Grid Slides in a beige color.

Courtney Williams

Courtney Williams has a natural style that can make a basic yellow cap look super cool. Worn sideways, Williams uses the cap to infuse an energetic attitude into her pre-game outfit. The Connecticut Sun player also wears a The World Teddy Short Sleeve Tee from Fashion Nova Men’s with a pair of black and white printed pants. Matching her yellow cap to her footwear, Williams also rocks a pair of Nike Dunk Low sneakers in a Brazil colorway. Apart from her signature “10” logo chain, she also wears a tight strand of pearls.

Emma Cannon

Playing for the Indiana Fever, Emma Cannon brings a big smile and a neutral color palette to her pre-game outfit. With her signature braids peeking out from her cap’s brim, Cannon makes a classic L.A. cap look more unique. The beige cap also features an Old English font styling for an unexpected twist. Infused with old-school vibes, Cannon’s layered gold necklaces and small hoop earrings also match the cap’s throwback look. She also wears a gray tie-dye t-shirt that features a mirrored print of roaring tiger faces.

Epiphanny Prince

Proudly repping Brooklyn, where she was born and raised, Epiphanny Prince adds some classic New York style to the Seattle Storm. She wears a classic black and white New Era New York Yankees Fitted Cap, which sits perfectly on her head. The black and white color palette is continued with her choice of a white long sleeve T-shirt and gray snakeskin shorts. On the feet, she adds a bit of designer drip to an otherwise laid-back look through Off-White socks and a pair of Undercover x Nike Daybreak Triple White sneakers.

Kristi Toliver

When she’s not playing for the LA Sparks, Kristi Toliver also works as an Assistant Coach for Dallas Mavericks. Adding to her identity as a multi-faceted athlete, she also calls herself an “aspiring golfer” in her Twitter bio. Perhaps her white cap that says “STEELE” is a reference to the popular golfer Roger Steele. There’s a golf-style influence that dominates Toliver’s outfit, as she wears an aqua half-zip pullover and a pair of black shorts. Toliver also wears a pair of white sneakers with laces that are perfectly untied.

Sydney Colson

In addition to her recent “If I text you…” Twitter spree, Sydney Colson is still bringing some in-person jokester energy to her pre-game tunnel fits. While she didn’t use the cap emoji in one of her Tweets, she wore a black cap with an “h.” logo to a recent game. Although Colson hasn’t confirmed the brand of her cap, it might be from humidity, a skate shop in New Orleans. The Las Vegas Aces player also wears a Las Vegas Aces Heathered Gray Pullover Sweatshirt and matching sweats, as well as a pair of rare Air Jordan 4 Retro in a Black Cat colorway.
