What To Watch For: Weekend Slate Full Of Playoff Implications

Doug Ammon

The WNBA’s 20th season is officially rounding the final turn of what is sure to be a photo finish. Although the Sparks, Lynx and Liberty have all secured their place in the playoffs a paltry three and a half games separate the current eight seeds (Storm and Sun are tied after Connecticut’s five-win-in-six-game surge) and fourth seeded Dream.

To muddle the waters more, that Sun-Storm battle for the eighth seed is going on just a half game ahead of the 10-17 Mystics and two and a half games in front of the 9-20 Wings. This sprint to finish will have every team exerting maximum effort, needing the smallest margins to prevail.

But, before we can cut the tape on the playoffs, it’s weekend’s like the one upcoming that will make all the difference. With 10 games over the course of Friday to Sunday, we’ll have a much clearer picture of who will have taken another step closer to the postseason. Here’s what to watch for this weekend:

Sunday (5 Games)

Mystics vs. Wings (4:30 PM, NBA TV)

It’s hard to find two teams that may need a win more than the Mystics and Wings come Sunday afternoon. If the Mystics drop their contest to the Lynx they may be another game back of the Storm for the final playoff seed. If the Wings can’t defeat the Sparks on Friday they’ll be riding a 10-game losing streak entering the showdown with the Mystics on Sunday.

There’s considerable talent on both rosters, most notably Skylar Diggins who has come back strong from season-ending ACL surgery last year to average 12.8 points and 3.5 assists per game. One can’t imagine this losing streak sitting well with the fierce competitive fire that burns within Diggins. If they don’t end the losing streak Friday, Sunday should be the day the tides turn in Texas.

Stars vs. Sky (6:00 PM, League Pass)

The Stars find themselves at the bottom of the heap but can still play the role of spoiler in their match-up against the Sky. San Antonio’s rookie point guard Moriah Jefferson has shown she has a bright future and her 4.1 assists per game are the eighth highest clip in the W. Still, she will be challenged greatly by Chicago’s talent-laden roster.

This contest has all the makings of a game that can propel Elena Delle Donne into the forefront of the MVP conversation. With a solid performance against Stewie’s Storm and then a followup output against the Stars, EDD could be closer than ever to her second-straight MVP at weekend’s end.

Storm vs. Dream (6:00 PM, League Pass)

After watching the playoff puzzle pieces shift on Friday and Saturday, the Dream will finally have their chance to join the fun against Seattle on Sunday evening. Four of Atlanta’s five starters are scoring in double figures, led by Angel McCoughtry’s 18.4 points per game.

But, the Storm boast prolific scorers in their own right in Breanna Stewart and Jewell Loyd’s combined 35.1 points per game. Sue Bird’s league-leading 5.8 assists per game add more versatility to Seattle’s potent offense. After so much time to sit back and watch proceedings the Dream will be itching to get back onto the court and make sure that their current fourth seed in the playoffs stays put.

Fever vs. Sparks (7:00 PM, NBA TV)

Tamika Catchings’ farewell tour makes its final stop in the Staples Center Sunday evening, and brings with it the Fever in a fight to extend Tamika’s last season into the postseason. Despite being 37 years old Catchings’ 13.4 points per game are a team-high and her 1.9 steals are tied for the most per game in the WNBA.

This is sure to be a special night individually for the 10-time All-Star but also will serve as a marker for where the Fever will play their postseason ball. The Sparks will look to continue to set themselves apart from the league as a whole.

Sun vs. Lynx (7:00 PM, League Pass)

The weekend slate concludes with a fascinating matchup between two very different teams. The Lynx are playoff-bound no matter where season goes while the Sun are on the outside looking in, and very well could be at the season’s end. One would think this would be a no-brainer for Minnesota but in fact the Sun have won the first two games of the season series and can sweep the Lynx with a win on Sunday.

The outcome of this game could go a long way in determining if the Sun are the real deal in the second-half of the season.
