The 2009 WNBA Finals opened with one of the greatest games in WNBA history, a 120-116 overtime win for the Phoenix Mercury over the Indiana Fever that shattered numerous WNBA records on its way to becoming the highest scoring game in league history. The Fever would rebound to win the next two games to take a 2-1 series lead and put them on the verge of their first WNBA title. However, the Mercury rebounded to win Game 4 on the road to send the series back to Phoenix for a decisive Game 5, which the Mercury won 94-86 to win their second WNBA title in three years. League MVP Diana Taurasi added another trophy to her collection as she was awarded Finals MVP honors after averaging 20.4 points and 6.8 rebounds for the series and posting a game-high 26 points in the clinching game.
