2024 Broadcast Schedule: Key Games Guide
Want to know where you can watch your favorite W players and teams during the season? Well, the 2024 Broadcast Schedule is here, and it’s jam-packed with rivalries, showdowns, big matchups, …and some to-be-announced rookie debuts. Catch games all season long across ABC, ESPN, CBS, Amazon and ION. And if you need a little help circling dates on the calendars, here are some you won’t want to miss.
5/14 Indiana Fever @ Connecticut Sun (7:30 pm ET, ESPN2)
As the Connecticut Sun host, 3-0 in their home openers, Aliyah Boston and the Indiana Fever face a challenging first opponent in Uncasville. The No. 1 pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft will debut on a Fever team that made strides last season and look to wedge themselves into the league’s upper echelon. With the top pick in each of the last two drafts, Indiana is talented, young, and poised to ascend, building off the foundation that Boston helped cement last season during a stellar rookie year.
However, Alyssa Thomas and a retooled Sun team that made the Semi-Finals in the 2023 WNBA Playoffs look to this game as an opportunity to make a statement out the gate. The Sun fell short of their ultimate goal as a team last season, but Thomas had a record-breaking career year. Now, how will the Sun gel with a tweaked roster?
5/14 Phoenix Mercury @ Las Vegas Aces (10 pm ET, ESPN2)
The reigning champs will host the newly retooled Mercury team and provide a stiff first test. The Aces only lost one game at Michelob Ultra Arena in 2023, including the postseason, owning the best home-court advantage in the league.
The Aces re-upped their surrounding cast, headlined by former MVP Candace Parker returning on a one-year deal. The Aces have won back-to-back championships, but there’s unfinished business for Parker after missing most of last season due to a foot injury.
Phoenix added former Finals MVP Kahleah Copper via trade with the Chicago Sky, Natasha Cloud via free agency, and wing Rebecca Allen through a sign-and-trade with the Connecticut Sun. Many of the same faces that have defined the Mercury for the past decade remain, but this team is drastically different on the remainder of the roster.
Few games will bring the same level of intrigue and mystique as this one.
5/18 Indiana Fever @ New York Liberty (1 pm ET, ABC)
On the first ABC game of the year, the New York Liberty host the Indiana Fever and the impending first overall pick. The two teams will face off two days prior in Indiana, but this is the game I have circled.
After getting their first shot, how do the Fever and the first overall pick handle adjustments and a revamped scout after a quick turnaround?
Last year’s No. 1 pick and immediate All-Star, Aliyah Boston, showed the potential to be a franchise cornerstone last season, and a matchup against a championship-level frontcourt after another winter of seasoning is exciting. She’s one of the best and brightest young stars in the game, and watching her take on solidified stars like Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones is what it’s all about.
For New York, so much of this game is about showing what their revamped bench group can do. While every starter is slated to be back for the Liberty this season, they’ll return just one player from last season’s rotation depth, Kayla Thornton. This group is much younger, more athletic, and potentially more versatile. Can they find cohesion early?
5/24 Indiana Fever @ Los Angeles Sparks (10 pm ET, ION)
For the first time in their WNBA Careers, the No. 1 and No. 2 picks in the 2024 WNBA Draft will meet as pros, starting a potential era to which both players will be linked. The Sparks are in new territory as they embark on a full-on youth wave, and an early measuring stick test against an up-and-coming Fever team is worth the buzz.
Just six players who saw court time for the Sparks in 2023 are on the roster for 2024. How does Stephanie Talbot fit in after missing last season due to injury? Does Rae Burrell take a step forward with increased opportunity? There are so many questions about Los Angeles, and this meeting provides a great chance to get some inklings of answers.
6/6 Chicago Sky @ Washington Mystics (7 pm ET, Prime Video)
In an early season Eastern conference showdown, two teams that enter the 2024 season with new outlooks tip off in a Prime Video night game.
Sky guard Dana Evans made significant strides playing overseas this winter and looks to take the next step in the WNBA. Chicago added many new faces in free agency and via trade, and it will be key to watch how that group forms a play style as the season unfolds early on.
Shakira Austin returns for the Mystics after missing much of this past season due to injury and will continue building off of a wonderful start to her pro career. Fresh off of her first season coaching and working in player development at the University of Michigan, Ariel Atkins is primed to take a step as one of the stars of DC. Atkins’ backcourt mate, Brittney Sykes, had a career year last season, and it will be intriguing to watch the two continue to grow together.
6/13 Seattle Storm @ Dallas Wings (7 pm ET, ESPN)
Roughly a month into the season, we’ll start to have a semblance of an idea of how the standings are starting to shake out. This matchup between the Seattle Storm and Dallas Wings on ESPN is an enticing inflection point.
Dallas took massive steps last season with Satou Sabally cementing herself as a star and Arike Ogunbowale continuing to make strides. The Wings were one of the younger teams in the league last year and went deep into the playoffs; what do they take away from that and how do they continue to grow after bringing back their core?
This adds another layer of spice too, as we get the ultimate Notre Dame crossover game, with Jewell and Skylar facing off against Arike, showcasing three eras of the history in South Bend, as well as adding to one of the best matchups of last season. Wings/Storm games last season were must-see TV, with Arike and Jewell firing on all cylinders.
6/15 New York Liberty @ Las Vegas Aces (3 pm ET, ABC)
Get ready for the WNBA Finals rematch. As mentioned previously, how the Liberty’s roster changes come together will be key to watch. Many of those changes were made in the light of wanting to better match up at the ultimate level, and this is a huge test in that.
Given how New York’s season ended in 2023, this game is crucial in making a statement and showing that this is a different year. You can make sure that the Aces have this game circled as well.
6/16 Chicago Sky @ Indiana Fever (12 pm ET, CBS)
The Sky and Fever meet for the second time in the season just over a month in. Once we hit a month of play, the data gathered starts to mean more; it is no longer just a handful of games and potential trends but a full indication of growth. How does the No. 1 pick grow and find cohesion alongside the rest of the Fever? How does Aliyah Boston continue to ascend in year two? What does Indiana’s rotation start to look like?
On the other hand, the Sky are in their first year with W legend Teresa Weatherspoon at the helm as Head Coach. Diamond DeShields also makes her return to Sky Town after signing as a free agent. How does the No. 3 pick acclimate in the early season and find their footing?
I have so many questions about how this team will play, what they’ll look like stylistically, and how everything will fit, and I can’t wait to watch that unfold here.
7/14 Phoenix Mercury @ Connecticut Sun (1 pm ET, ABC)
We get an exciting face-off in one of the last games before the Olympic break.
The Mercury made sweeping changes as mentioned, and this brings an exciting homecoming for UConn’s Diana Taurasi as she plays back in Connecticut.
The Connecticut Sun returned its core but made significant changes around the roster. In year two under Stephanie White, how does this group come together this season? Do they take another step after more time repping out her read-and-react offense?
It’s worth remembering that while this group has been together, injuries have played an impact since before the Bubble. With Bri Jones back in the fold, recovered from her Achilles injury sustained last season, does Connecticut find a new stride that boosts them up?
How teams handle business before All-Star and Olympic breaks greatly matters in stacking wins, and this is a huge opportunity for both squads to do just that.
