NEW YORK, May 4, 2022The WNBA and Twitter today announced the streaming of 12 live games on Twitter and weekly WNBA Twitter Spaces during the 2022 season as part of a new multi-year partnership deal. This season marks the sixth consecutive year that the league’s games will be available on the platform through @WNBA.

As part of the expanded partnership, in addition to streaming regular season games, Twitter will distribute more highlights than ever before and features throughout the full season, including during major events on the league’s calendar – WNBA Tip Off presented by CarMax, AT&T WNBA All-Star, WNBA Commissioner’s Cup presented by Coinbase, WNBA Playoffs presented by Google, and the WNBA Finals presented by YouTube TV. Building off the success of last season, the partnership is also increasing the ways in which fans can get regular access to their favorite WNBA players on Twitter with weekly highlight franchises and unique player engagement content.

Twitter Spaces returns for another season of WNBA action. Hosted by veteran WNBA journalists and broadcast personalities Ari Chambers and Monica McNutt, weekly Spaces will cover a variety of topics this year focusing on WNBA players, legends and other members of the WNBA family. From previews of upcoming action, including major events like the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup presented by Coinbase, to recaps of recent games, Twitter Spaces will serve as a gathering place for WNBA fans featuring in-depth conversations with WNBA stars talking about their WNBA journeys, their lives and interests off the court, and their views on the evolution of the league as it embarks on its 26th season.

In addition to bringing WNBA fans closer to the game and growing the WNBA community, all the WNBA content in this expanded partnership will be available to brands via Twitter’s Amplify program.

Twitter’s game schedule begins with WNBA Tip-Off presented by CarMax on Friday, May 6, (10 p.m. ET) when a pair of four-time WNBA champions – the Seattle Storm and the Minnesota Lynx – meet in Seattle with each team featuring a pair of players who were named to “The W25” in 2021 when the league celebrated its 25th season – Seattle’s Sue Bird and Breanna Stewart and Minnesota’s Sylvia Fowles and Angel McCoughtry. The contest is the first of eight WNBA Commissioner’s Cup presented by Coinbase games on the overall Twitter schedule, which features seven matchups on Fridays and five on Thursdays.

The Twitter schedule concludes with the Connecticut Sun and reigning Kia WNBA MVP Jonquel Jones and fellow 2021 All-Stars DeWanna Bonner and Brionna Jones taking on the Los Angeles Sparks, whose revamped roster includes newly acquired Liz Cambage, a two-time All-WNBA Team selection, and 2016 Kia WNBA MVP Nneka Ogwumike on Thursday, Aug. 11 (10:30 p.m. ET).

The WNBA television and streaming schedule for the league’s 26th season includes a combined 160 games across the WNBA’s television and streaming partners from opening day through the conclusion of the regular season on Sunday, Aug. 14.  In addition to the 12 games available on Twitter, the WNBA regular season will feature 25 national broadcasts across ABC, ESPN and ESPN2, a combined 40 games on the CBS Television Network and CBS Sports Network, 46 contests available on NBA TV, 17 games on Amazon Prime Video and 20 matchups on Facebook Watch. Google, a WNBA Changemaker and Presenting Partner of the WNBA Playoffs, and Disney Networks will also collaborate to broadcast every game of the league’s expanded postseason, up to a record-high 27 games.

A redesigned WNBA League Pass also is on tap for launch this season, offering more than 130 live games and every game On Demand. The 2022 regular season features a record-high 36 games per team, providing fans greater opportunities to see the best players in the world compete at the highest level. The WNBA Commissioner’s Cup presented by Coinbase – an in-season competition that designates a portion of regular season conference games in the first half of the season (10 per team) as “Commissioner’s Cup games” – returns for its second year. The event provides added incentive, with a half million dollars on the line for players, and offers fans enhanced conference rivalry competition through which to support their favorite teams.

About the WNBA

Tipping off its 26th season on May 6, 2022, the WNBA is a bold, progressive basketball league that stands for the power of women.  Featuring 12 teams, the W is a unique sports property that combines competition and entertainment with a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and social responsibility.  Through its world-class athletes, the in-game fan experience, TV and digital broadcasts, digital and social content and community outreach programs, the league celebrates and elevates the game of basketball and the culture around it.

In 2020, the WNBA and the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) signed a groundbreaking eight-year CBA that charts a new course for women’s basketball – and women’s sports overall – with a focus on increased player compensation, improvements to the player experience, expanded career development opportunities and resources specifically tailored to the female professional athlete.  Key elements of the agreement are supported through the league’s partnership platform, WNBA Changemakers, with AT&T, the WNBA’s Marquee Partner and inaugural Changemaker, as well as fellow inaugural Changemakers Deloitte and NIKE, Inc, and subsequent additions Google and U.S. Bank.  During the 2020 season, the WNBA and WNBPA launched the WNBA Justice Movement forming the Social Justice Council with the mission of being a driving force of necessary change and continuing conversations about race and voting rights, among other important societal issues.
